The first thing that I would say to anyone who is interested in family history is to be careful of identity theft. So many banks and the like ask you for your mothers maiden name as a security question, and this in reality about as insecure as it gets. If anyone knows your name and birthday then they can get a copy of your birth certificate with your mothers maiden name on it. So next time that you are asked for your mothers maiden name give them something completely different. Pick your best friends surname, or your first girlfriends surname or something like that. For the same reasoning you will not find any information about anyone living on this web site, nor any information that could compromise anyone livings identity.
When doing research you will get the opportunity to look at and copy old documents such as marriage registers. Before you go publishing these in the public domain, please remember that these documents are protected by copyright. Copyright law is not straightforward, but generally lasts 70 years from the death of the author (see the Intellectual Copyright Office website). My take on this is that the average priest probably lives until he is 80. So, if he started doing christenings when he was 20, he would probably live another 60 years. 60+70 = 130, so it is probably a reasonable assumption that any document over 130 years in age is out of copyright. But, this is my interpretation and cannot and will not be held liable for this interpretation.
